EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Scott Gomez and Brian Gionta set each other up for first-period goals Saturday, helping the New Jersey Devils end a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
Jeff Friesen and Mike Rupp also scored for the Stanley Cup champions, who avoided their first four-game losing streak since November 2001.
Jeff O'Neill scored for the Hurricanes, who are winless in six (0-4-2).
Gomez backhanded Gionta's rebound past Kevin Weekes at 8:56 to put the Devils up 1-0, the first goal for Gomez in 16 games.
Gomez made a play from his knees to set up Gionta's score and make it 2-0. Gomez was knocked down behind the Carolina net by the Hurricanes' Marty Murray and a delayed penalty was signaled. Gomez managed to center the puck to the slot, where Gionta whipped the feed into the net at 19:28.
Friesen scored on a power play at 13:08 of the second to put New Jersey ahead 3-0. New Jersey dominated the period, outshooting Carolina 10-1. That lone Hurricanes shot cost Martin Brodeur a bid for his 75th career shutout.
Brodeur had no one to blame but himself, coming out of the crease to shoot the puck up the boards. O'Neill picked off the goalie's clearing attempt for an unassisted score at 14:22.
Rupp increased the Devils' lead to 4-1 at 7:18 of the third on a shot that glanced off his leg and required a video review.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Sean Burke stopped 25 shots to win his 300th career game as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the New York Rangers 6-2 Saturday for their fifth straight win.
Burke, the 20th goalie to reach that milestone, won his second straight -- both against the Rangers -- since being acquired from Phoenix on Monday. He got the victory in Philadelphia's 2-1 win at New York on Thursday.
Burke has stopped 51 of 54 shots in the two wins.
Patrick Sharp scored two goals for the Flyers, who maintained their nine-point lead over New Jersey in the Atlantic Division. The Devils beat Carolina 4-1 on Saturday.
Radovan Somik, John LeClair, Michal Handzus, and Tony Amonte also scored, and Kim Johnsson had three assists for the Flyers, who have just one loss in their last 10 games (8-1-1).
Chris Simon and Alex Kovalev scored power-play goals for the Rangers.
Somik and LeClair scored within a span of 1:12 late in the first period to put the Flyers ahead 2-0.
Somik, left alone in front of the net, took a pass from Kim Johnsson and slid the puck low past the glove side of Rangers goalie Mike Dunham at 16:08. LeClair flipped in a shot from the right of the net at 17:20.
The Flyers broke it open with four goals on seven shots in the second period.
Handzus knocked in a rebound of a shot by LeClair on a power play at 3:32, and Amonte beat Dunham with a forehand shot to make it 4-0 five minutes later.
Simon got the Rangers on the scoreboard with just under eight minutes remaining in the period, redirecting a shot from the point by Brian Leetch.

CHICAGO (AP) -- Tuomo Ruutu knocked in his own rebound four minutes into overtime to give Chicago a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday, extending the Blackhawks' winning streak to a season-high three games.
Ruutu took a pass from Tyler Arnason in the slot and took a shot that was blocked by Boston goaltender Andrew Raycroft. The rebound popped up, however, and Ruutu knocked it in with the shaft of his stick.
Chicago's Bryan Berard scored a power-play goal with 8:56 remaining in regulation to tie the game.
With Boston's Joe Thornton sitting for tripping, Alex Zhamnov won the faceoff back to Berard. Berards slap shot from 35 feet beat Raycroft on the stick side.
The Bruins lost for the second time in their last eight games (6-2-0-2). Both losses came in overtime. Boston is 2-2-0-2 on its current seven-game road trip.
P.J. Axelsson opened the scoring at 1:11 of the second period. Axelsson capitalized on a two-on-one breakaway, faking a pass to Brian Rolston and lifting a backhanded shot between goaltender Craig Anderson and the right post.

DETROIT (AP) -- Alex Tanguay scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and David Aebischer made 28 saves to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.
Tanguay scored off a rebound, and Joe Sakic had a power-play goal midway through the third to put Colorado ahead 4-2.
Aebischer made two spectacular saves against Brett Hull in the third -- one just before Sakic's 23rd goal and another just after it.
On the first stop, he sprawled out several feet toward the right circle to get his stick on Hull's shot. On the other, Aebischer dove from the top of the crease to the left post and his stick deflected Hull's blast.
The Avalanche moved four points ahead of Detroit in the Western Conference after earning a point in their 15th straight road game. They have lost just two games -- both in overtime, one to Detroit -- in their last 12 games.
Steve Yzerman and Jiri Fischer scored for the Red Wings, who saw a season-long six-game unbeaten streak end.
Detroit's Manny Legace made 25 saves in his first start since Curtis Joseph sprained his ankle. Joseph, who is expected to be out another week, was hurt in his first start after Dominik Hasek announced his season was over because of a groin injury.
The Red Wings had killed 14 straight penalties before playing Colorado, who scored on two of six opportunities with an extra man.
Teemu Selanne's power-play goal tied the game at 1 midway through the second period, after Yzerman scored his 16th goal in the first.
Fischer's goal, his first since the season opener, put the Red Wings ahead late in the second period. Karlis Skrastins tied the game at 2 late in the second.
After Tanguay and Sakic scored to give Colorado the cushion it needed, Peter Forsberg added an empty-net goal in the final minute.
