YOUNGSTOWN -- Against Ursuline Tuesday, the Mooney High boys basketball team responded to a 9-0 deficit with a 16-0 run that had Cardinals hoops historians looking to the record book.
Friday at Wilson High, no looks were needed as the Cardinals (12-4) opened with a 28-0 run on their way to a 72-44 victory.
"There was no doubt about it being Friday the 13th because we were in the twilight zone doing everything wrong and nothing right in that first quarter," Wilson coach Mark Cherol said.
Turnovers costly
Ten of Wilson's 23 turnovers in the game were in the initial quarter which ended with Mooney leading 26-0.
"We had a lot of transition breaks and when they weren't there, we executed well in our half-court game," Mooney coach Nick Bellino said.
Mooney senior guard Patsy Daltorio, who had eight of his 14 points in the opening period, said, "Coach [Nick] Bellino wanted transition points tonight and we had plenty of them early.
Guard Jeff Hehr scored 13 points and made six steals and six assists.
Zidian leads Cards
David Zidian scored 16 points and grabbed 11 of his team's 30 rebounds.
"We got out and ran early and that was the difference," said Ron Stoops who scored 17 points.
It was a Stoops' 3-pointer at the buzzer that beat Wilson 52-49 on Dec. 30.
Wilson (4-13) didn't hit the scoreboard until Michael Artis made a field goal nine minutes into the game.
Chauncey Whitlow led the Redmen in scoring with 14 points and Bruce Smith had 10 of his team's 22 rebounds.
