WOMEN'S COLLEGE ROUNDUP Top 25 games
Ohio St. 75, No. 10 Minnesota 57
COLUMBUS -- Past a midseason lull that knocked them from the Top 25, the Ohio State Buckeyes are making a push for the NCAA tournament. "We have become a better team in the past five games," Buckeyes coach Jim Foster said Thursday night. "Our team has maturity and is growing and as a result, good things are happening. We are doing the things you need to do to win." Caity Matter led the Buckeyes (14-8, 6-5 Big Ten) with 28 points, including 24 in the first half when Minnesota lost leading scorer Lindsay Whalen to a wrist injury. Whalen left the game with about 3 minutes before halftime after being knocked to the floor while going for an offensive rebound. The severity of her injury won't be known until Friday, a Minnesota team spokeswoman said. The Buckeyes were ahead 32-16 when Whalen, who averages 21.4 points per game, got hurt. Ohio State easily built its lead without the Golden Gophers' best player on the floor. "It really took a toll on us when she went out. She's kinda the heart and soul of our team, but we made the commitment at halftime to not quit and I don't think we quit," Gophers coach Pam Borton said. Matter made 10 of 12 shots, including 4-of-5 3-pointers, in the first half to help the Buckeyes take a 43-18 lead at the break. "I was smart with my shot selection and they went in," Matter said. "There was intensity on the floor tonight." Ohio State shot 18-for-27 in the first half and 59.1 percent for the game, while the Gophers went 7-for-26 before halftime and finished at 35.5 percent. "We didn't show up tonight in the first half and they took advantage of our turnovers," Borton said. "It was like a flurry. We never dug ourselves out of it." Janel McCarville led Minnesota (18-4, 7-4) with 16 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Kadidja Andersson added 11 points and Whalen scored five. Jessica Davenport had 13 points for Ohio State and LaToya Turner added 12 points and nine rebounds.
