One-lane traffic this weekunder bridge in Girard
GIRARD -- Traffic on Liberty Street under the Interstate 80 bridge will be reduced to one lane Tuesday through Friday and maintained by flaggers as waterlines are re-routed in preparation for bridge work. Water on Liberty Street will be shut off from 7 to 11 a.m. Thursday as the waterlines are re-routed, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced. The work is being done in connection with construction of the $24.9 million 711 connector highway, which is scheduled for completion by fall 2005.
Wick Neighbors to havea membership drive
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Wick Neighbors Inc. will announce a membership drive as part of its efforts to redevelop Smoky Hollow at a meeting at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Butler Institute of American Art. The group has already launched an advanced gifts campaign and is also seeking public money. Margaret Murphy, the group's executive director, said it needs about $5 million. The meeting will also include updates on the project's planning efforts. There will be discussion about the proposed central park in Smoky Hollow, but not a forum on its design as previously announced.
Pint Size Heroes
CAMPBELL -- St. Joseph the Provider School is working with the American Red Cross on a new Pint Size Heroes Program that targets elementary and middle schools. A Pint Size Hero is a child who helps recruit donors to a school blood drive. St. Joseph holds a drive from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the school cafeteria. Call (330) 755-0266.
Driving under influence
STRUTHERS -- Judge James R. Lanzo sentenced Kathleen O'Brien, 48, of the 700 block of Woodbine Street, Warren, to 180 days in jail, with 177 days suspended, and one year's probation and fined her $250 plus court costs after finding her guilty of driving under the influence. Lanzo also fined O'Brien $50 plus court costs after finding her guilty of speeding. A child endangering charge was dismissed. Her 12-year-old son was a front-seat passenger in the car when she was arrested July 16. Lanzo also offered O'Brien the option of attending the Driver's Educational Alternative Program in lieu of the three days in jail.
Burglary charge
CAMPBELL -- Mansol N. Young, 29, of Kendis Circle, Youngstown, is set to appear in Campbell Municipal Court on Feb. 24 for a preliminary hearing and pretrial on charges of aggravated burglary, resisting arrest, possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. Young was arrested early Friday after a 73-year-old Coitsville Road woman told police she heard her kitchen window break and then saw a man frantically running through her house in an apparent attempt to get out. In the process, the police report says, the man broke a living room window, scattering glass and blood throughout the house. Young was bleeding from a cut near his eye when police apprehended him running north on Coitsville Road near Ohio Avenue.
7th Ward meeting
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 7th Ward Citizens Coalition will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Brownlee Woods Presbyterian Church at 1970 Everett Ave. The speaker will be Bill DeCicco, director of CASTLO, who will talk about the Mahoning River Corridor of Opportunity project.
