HUBBARD -- Schools Superintendent James J. Herrholtz has tendered his resignation to take a similar job at a Lake County school district.
The board of education will meet Wednesday to discuss the transition of district leadership. The board must accept the resignation before he can leave, which Herrholtz doesn't believe will be a problem.
"I will always be a Hubbard Eagle. I'll always call Hubbard my home," Herrholtz, 34, said Thursday.
If the board releases him from his contract, Herrholtz, a Hubbard native, will leave March 15, the same day he will become superintendent of the Madison Local School District.
He will replace Stan Heffner, who is leaving as superintendent effective March 1 to become associate superintendent of curriculum for the Ohio Department of Education.
Herrholtz was recruited by the Hubbard school board. He was a teacher, coach and assistant high school principal at Madison before returning to Hubbard.
"It's a bigger school district. It's a move up for me," he said, noting that opportunity don't knock often.
Herrholtz has been superintendent here for three years and is in the first year of a four-year contract. His current salary is $83,000 annually.
His background
He is a 1987 graduate of Hubbard High School. As a senior, he successfully led a student campaign to pass a school levy.
He received his bachelor's degree in 1991 from Youngstown State University, where he also received masters' degrees in school administration and curriculum. He is a doctorate candidate at YSU.
Herrholtz said he's been happy with the Hubbard school board and the staff and proud of the improvements they have made in the district. He termed the decision to leave as "agonizing."
Herrholtz and his wife, Samantha, have two children. His wife is a Madison-area native and has relatives there.
Their children will complete school this year at Hubbard before moving to Madison, Herrholtz said.
