HELOISE Hint for removing candle wax updated

Dear Heloise: I had a candle that spilled over onto my new carpet. How do I get it out? Valerie Demas, Laurel, Md.
This is one of the top-10-asked questions, especially following the holidays! Here's what to do: Let the wax harden, which will make it easier to remove. Heloise Update: Place a metal pan filled with ice over the area to speed the process. Use a blunt instrument to hit the wax and break it up. Vacuum up as much as possible. Then scrape up the rest using a dull butter knife and pick up all the loosened wax pieces.
Now, plug in your iron and set it to a low/warm setting. Get an old, clean white towel, place it over the area and carefully press the spot using the iron.
As you see wax transferring to the towel, move to a clean portion of the towel and continue pressing. Repeat until no more wax comes up.
Note: If the wax was colored and a stain remains, first check the carpet care instructions and follow the recommendations. With some carpets, you can try using dry-cleaning fluid or a good carpet cleaner to remove it. Good luck! Heloise
Dear Heloise: A person's garage door can be opened by someone else who is using the same frequency on his or her garage-door opener. Whenever we go out of town, we keep this from happening by unplugging our garage-door-opener unit. All the remote openers in the world will definitely not open it while it's unplugged. Dear Heloise: I had a lot of trouble keeping my eyeglasses from sliding or getting knocked off my bedside table at night.
One day, I was cleaning the room and left a dry, clean sponge on the table. That night I saw the sponge and got the idea of resting my glasses on it. It works wonderfully -- no more slipping, and I can find them easily. Lucy Burton Johnson, via e-mail
Dear Heloise: I thought of another hint using ironing boards after reading about some uses in a recent column. Campers can use them as portable, adjustable tables for food preparation and as fish-cleaning tables. They can be stored on the ladder on the RV's back or on the rack on top. The all-metal mesh top (without the pad and cover) can be hosed off or doused in a lake to clean. Oletta Elkins, Graham, Texas
This is a new one! Love those RV hints -- keep sending them in, and I'll share them with other RV enthusiasts through the column! Heloise
Dear Heloise: When you open a can of paint, place some pipe cleaners in the groove. When you are finished painting and wish to replace the lid, just remove them, and you have a clean groove. Wanda Frantz, via e-mail
