At 65, most people are thinking about retirement, but that's not on Walter DeBald's mind just yet.
"I jokingly tell people I'm working part time, meaning I come in at 7 a.m. and leave by 6 p.m., therefore I'm working less than half a day," he said.
DeBald owns DeBald & amp; Co., which sells office supplies and office furniture, offering free next-day delivery in the tri-county area. The company was founded in 1952.
After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School and spending four years in the Air Force, DeBald worked full-time at DeBald & amp; Co., which was then owned by his uncle, and attended Youngstown State University in the evenings. After DeBald completed college, his uncle, John S. DeBald, gave him the opportunity to buy into the business in 1961.
DeBald took the offer, eventually buying his uncle out, and said he loves the business and has never had the desire to go anywhere else.
"I have always wanted to be self-employed. It depends what you want out of life. I tell people all the time, particularly young kids, try to find a job that you really enjoy, because you'll do it much better and you'll enjoy what you're doing," he said.
DeBald said he saw how happy his uncle was at work.
"My uncle, God rest his soul, was 82 years old, out making sales calls the day he died," he said.
DeBald said his business has grown over the years, despite large chain office-supply stores coming to the area. He said his employees are part of what has kept the business successful over the years.
"I've got a dynamite crew here. Most of the people who are here have been here a long time and are all quite knowledgeable. They're here to help the customers, and that's probably what has allowed us to succeed over the years, and that will probably allow us to remain here in the future," he said. "I'd put my staff up against any one of [the chain stores] with no hesitation."
