SHARON, Pa. -- Aqua Pennsylvania Inc. has given the United Way of Mercer County $2,000 on top of the $7,550 the company and its employees have pledged for the agency's 2003 campaign. The gift was presented to the United Way on Thursday. Aqua Pennsylvania was formerly Consumers Pennsylvania Water Co. "Our name has changed, but our focus remains on being a local company," said spokesman Walter J. Pishkur. "We are committed to the Shenango Valley and to helping organizations like the United Way effectively respond to community needs."
OEPA, Central Wastereach pact on landfill
ALLIANCE -- Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has reached an agreement with Central Waste Inc. to properly fund final closure and postclosure care for its solid waste landfill at 12003 Oyster Road, Smith Township, Mahoning County.
Kara Allison, spokeswoman for the Ohio EPA, said that under the current legal agreement, the company must establish a financial assurance fund of $2,318,182 by Oct. 11. Allison said if Central Waste fails to meet this deadline, the company will be required to immediately begin final closure of the landfill. Central Waste signed an agreement with Ohio EPA in September 1993 to establish a trust fund of about $1.4 million for closure and postclosure care of the landfill. Ohio EPA asked the Ohio Attorney General's office to pursue legal action in March 1997 after the company only partially funded the trust fund with about $40,000.
Senior advisory council
U.S. Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, has established a 145-member senior advisory council to help him identify issues of concern to senior citizens and find ways to best address those concerns. These Mahoning Valley residents were appointed: Allan Chamberlin of Leetonia, Barbara A. Lynch of East Palestine, Eugene Dempsey of Youngstown, Alan G. Brant of Warren, and Paula Snyder of Warren.
'Youngstown Report'
KENT -- PBS 45 & amp; 49 will suspend production of "Youngstown Report" after tonight's broadcast at 10. After four years, the series is being put on hiatus because of station budget constraints.
Executive Producer Don Freeman hopes to relaunch the series in the fall, pending local underwriting, and will take advantage of the break to make the series stronger in reflecting the importance of the Mahoning Valley and its people.
Winona man elected
WINONA -- Gordon Dawes Jr. will serve as president of the Ruritan National Foundation, the Dublin, Va.-based charitable arm of Ruritan, a service organization.
Dawes, who lives on Holmeswood Drive, recently was elected to the post. He is a member of the Winona Ruritan Club.
The Ruritan National Foundation provides financial assistance to high school students so that they can further their education. Dawes' duties with the foundation will be on a part-time basis.
Poster contest winners
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County commissioners recognized winners Thursday of the annual Earth Day poster contest, sponsored by the county recycling division and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Winners were Joseph Ciarniello, Anna Patoray, Franchesca Noday, Jasmine Jones and Matt Rosile, all from St. Anne School; and Catey Beede of St. Luke School.
Building changes OK'd
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city's design review committee has approved cosmetic changes to the outside of the former Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital on the North Side.
The building owner, CMD Realty Group, is leasing a small amount of space to a few nonprofit agencies.
The company received permission to replace signs, seal and stripe the parking lot and improve landscaping in front of the building at 100 Broadway Ave.

Nemeth; state central committeewoman: Kathleen Duzzny; state central committeeman: Sylvester D. Patton Jr.*; Ohio 60th House District: Michael E. O'Hara. All unopposed candidates were also endorsed. More than 85 people voted for the endorsements.
