Sharon schools save with salvage efforts

SHARON, Pa. -- The efforts of Sharon City School District's maintenance department to salvage and sell materials removed from the high school-middle school during renovation have paid off handsomely.
Ralph Trenga, supervisor of buildings and grounds, said his crew has been able to sell salvaged materials for $96,000 so far, and has about $15,000 worth of material, much of it copper, yet to be sold.
He asked the school board Wednesday for permission to spend about $9,000 of the salvage fund to buy a grader and roller to be used on district athletic fields.
The salvage fund has already paid for a $39,000 tractor-backhoe, a $14,000 utility vehicle and about $33,000 worth of miscellaneous items including television brackets and a washer and dryer, he said.
There's about $11,000 left in the fund right now, he said, noting that the efforts have saved taxpayers much money.
