SHARON, Pa.-- Witnesses said Anthony C. Teague confessed the slaying of Tedda Otey at least three times within 72 hours of her death.
Teague, 31, of 1105 Baldwin Ave., is charged with criminal homicide in the death of Otey, 31, of Youngstown. The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. Jan. 12 in Teague's home, where they had lived as a couple.
Authorities said Otey had recently moved to Youngstown with the couple's four children, but came back to Sharon the day of her death to pick up medication for the children.
Teague, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, handcuffs and leg chains, sat with his head bowed during a 45-minute preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Justice James McMahon as witnesses recounted how he admitted killing Otey.
Witness's account
Kenneth Hughes of North Albright-McKay Road, Brookfield, who described Teague as "one of my best friends," said Teague showed up in his living room around 8 a.m. Jan. 13 and told him he had shot Otey the night before and then turned the gun, a .38 caliber snubnose revolver, on himself.
Hughes said Teague told him Otey had come to his home to pick up the medication and they got into an argument about her refusal to come back to live with him.
Hughes said Teague told him he pulled out his gun and pointed it at her and it went off. Teague said he shot at her again before shooting himself in the left side of the chest in a suicide attempt, Hughes said.
Detective Jerry Smith of the Sharon Police Department said he interviewed Teague at the police station Jan. 15 and that Teague said Otey came to his house to pick up the prescriptions. Teague said they had consensual sex but got into an argument over her refusal to return to live with him.
Teague told him that he planned to scare Otey with the gun, but they scuffled, the gun went off and she fell to the floor. Teague said he didn't see any blood so he pointed the gun at her head and fired again and then shot himself in a suicide attempt, Smith said.
Smith said Teague was reminded of his rights not to incriminate himself but signed a waiver agreeing to talk.
Capt. Detective Mathew McComb said he interviewed Teague just after the Smith interview and Teague told him the same story except that he shot Otey as she tried to run out of the room. She fell to the floor and he said he shot her again, McComb said.
Head wound was fatal
Authorities said Otey suffered a grazing wound on the right side of her torso and a fatal wound in the back of her head.
All three witnesses said Teague admitted that he left the scene in Otey's car and drove to Brookfield, eventually winding up at Hughes' home.
Hughes said he took Teague with him to a doctor's appointment in Hermitage the morning after the shooting and Teague remained in Hughes' car.
Hughes said he then drove to a Rite Aid pharmacy in Sharon to get a prescription filled and told the pharmacist about the shooting and asked her to notify authorities.
Hughes said he and Teague went back to his home in Brookfield, but then he drove Teague to Liberty Township and eventually to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where Teague was arrested.
Teague spent a day in the hospital and then waived his extradition to Pennsylvania to face the homicide charge. McMahon ordered Teague held for trial after Wednesday's hearing, and he remains in Mercer County jail without bond.
