Ohio EPA reaches deal on solid-waste landfill

ALLIANCE -- Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has reached an agreement with Central Waste Inc. to properly fund final closure and post-closure care for its solid-waste landfill at 12003 Oyster Road, Smith Township, Mahoning County.
Kara Allison, spokeswoman for the Ohio EPA, said that under the current legal agreement, the company must establish a financial assurance fund of $2,318,182 by Oct. 11. Allison said if Central Waste fails to meet this deadline, the company will be required to immediately begin final closure of the landfill.
Central Waste had signed an agreement with Ohio EPA in September 1993 to establish a trust fund of about $1.4 million for closure and post-closure care of the landfill. Ohio EPA asked the Ohio Attorney General's office to pursue legal action in March 1997 after the company only partially funded the trust fund with about $40,000.
