MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE Kent State's late effort seals win over Buffalo



No Akron player scored in double figures in a close win over Miami.

KENT -- John Edwards scored 24 points and Matt Jakeway gave Kent State the lead with two late free throws in a 79-75 victory over Buffalo on Wednesday night.
Jakeway, who finished with 16 points, hit two free throws with 4:07 remaining to snap a tie at 68 and give the Golden Flashes (17-3, 11-1 Mid-American Conference) the lead for good. Edwards then followed with a layup before Eric Haut and Bryan Bedford added free throws for a 74-68 lead.
DeAndre Haynes chipped in with 17 points and Haut had 10 for Kent State. Mario Jordan scored 21 points, Mark Bortz came off the bench to add 14 points and 10 rebounds and Daniel Gilbert had 10 points for Buffalo.
Akron 48, Miami, Ohio 44
AKRON -- John Hollingsworth gave Akron the lead for the final time and Romeo Travis added two free throws with three seconds remaining to preserve the victory.
No Akron (11-10, 5-8 MAC) player scored in double figures, with Jeremiah Wood scoring eight points and Hollingsworth adding seven.
Juby Johnson scored 14 points and Danny Horace had 11 for Miami (12-8, 8-4).
Toledo 69, N. Illinois 61
TOLEDO -- Keith Triplett scored 11 of his 15 points during a 25-0 second-half run to lead Toledo (16-5, 10-3 MAC). Florentino Valencia added 11 points for Toledo. Perry Smith led Northern Illinois (7-15, 2-10) with 14 points, while Walter Thompson scored 13 points and Rome Sanders had 12.
Bowling Green 81, Ohio 71
BOWLING GREEN -- Ron Lewis had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead Bowling Green (10-12, 6-6 MAC), while John Reimold added 16 points, Steven Wright had 13 and Cory Eyink 11. Sonny Troutman led the Bobcats (8-15, 5-7) with 26 points, Delvar Barrett had 13 and Jaivon Harris added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Marshall 75, E. Michigan 68
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall (8-12, 5-7 MAC) snapped a four-game losing streak as Marvin Black scored 16 points. A.W. Hamilton added 13 points for Marshall (8-12, 5-7 Mid-American Conference). Markus Austin scored 12 of his game-high 26 points in the second half for the Eagles (9-11, 4-8).
W. Michigan 72, Ball St. 61
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Mike Williams scored 15 of his 25 points in the second half, including six in a 13-3 run early in the period, to lead Western Michigan (18-2, 11-1 MAC). Reggie Berry finished with 15 points and Anthony Kann had 14 for the Broncos. Cameron Echols led Ball State (9-11, 6-6) with 17 points.
