MCDONALD -- For the Springfield High girls basketball team, success is not measured by winning or losing, but it is only measured in winning.
Dating back to last season, the Tigers have amassed 29 consecutive regular season victories. This year they stand at 18-0 after defeating McDonald 66-46 Wednesday.
"Our kids have dedicated themselves to the team," Springfield coach Sandi Kohler said.
The Blue Devils came out in the first quarter, keeping the game in reach. A 4-0 run allowed for McDonald to take its only lead at the two-minute mark of the first quarter before the momentum shifted going into the second.
Springfield came out in a flurry and quickly outscored the Blue Devils 12-2 in the initial four minutes of the quarter.
McDonald refused to quit, ending the half on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 31-21.
"We were playing with intensity, and then we got a little comfortable," Kohler said.
Johnson nets 24
The third quarter belonged to Springfield's Lindsay Johnson, who scored 10 of the team's first 13 points of the half. Johnson completed the night with a game-high 24 points.
"We look to get her [Johnson] the ball, but it comes off the offense," Kohler said. "Because she is versatile, it allows us to do different things."
Once again, Springfield came out firing, but it was unable to finish the third quarter in the same fashion. McDonald managed another late 8-0 streak.
"We've been struggling with that all year," Springfield's Sarah Fannon said. "We shut them down, and then we relax."
Fannon hits long range
While Johnson worked in the paint, Fannon manned the perimeter. She connected on five 3-pointers and added two free throws, finishing the game with 17 points.
"I was just getting open. We were setting plays and executing," Fannon said. "I think this was one of the best games we've played all year."
Ashleigh Tondo's 20 points paced McDonald.
"I thought we did shoot the ball well," Kohler said. "I was excited that no matter who we had in the lineup, we got production."
