Guide for the disabledwins society's award
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Cheryl and Bill Duke wrote "The Virginia Travel Guide for Persons With Disabilities" out of personal frustration. Their son, Paul, sits in a 400-pound electric wheelchair that can't be lifted over the few steps that often determine whether he can get inside any given building. Now the Dukes' travel guide, which is distributed free by the Virginia Tourism Corp., has won an award from the Society for Accessible Travel & amp; Hospitality.
The guide categorizes accessible places around the state, making it possible for travelers with impairments of mobility, sight and hearing to plan trips. The guide not only lists what sites are wheelchair-accessible, but it also describes Braille signs, availability of sign-language interpreters, and even the width in inches of doorways, so travelers will know in advance whether their wheelchairs will fit.
Their guide to Virginia can be downloaded from www.virginia.org/disability or ordered by phone through (800) 742-3935 or (804) 371-0327 (TDD).
Econoguide titles tacklecruises, Vegas, Disney
GUILFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Among the most popular vacation choices for Americans are cruises, Las Vegas and Disney. But any of these trips can be expensive.
Four new titles from the Econoguide series, published by the Connecticut-based Globe Pequot Press, can help you get the most for your money. All four paperbacks are written by Corey Sandler and priced at $17.95.
"Cruises 2004" can help you navigate the many choices for a vacation at sea, especially for first-time cruisers trying to figure things out.
"Las Vegas 2004" -- which also includes information on Reno, Lake Tahoe and a few other localities -- provides tips on saving "time and money on travel, hotels, restaurants and entertainment," the author states in his introduction.
"Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando 2004" and "Disneyland Resort, Universal Studios Hollywood 2004" cover Disney as well as other major attractions in Southern California and Central Florida.
