AUSTINTOWN Former Frank Ohl treasurer arraigned
She is the second school employee arrested on a theft charge in 12 months.
AUSTINTOWN --The former Frank Ohl Middle School treasurer was arraigned in Mahoning County Court Thursday morning on a charge of felony theft in office.
Rosemary Hudak, 50, of Collingwood Place, did not enter a plea to the charge, as county court does not hear pleas on felonies. Judge David D'Apolito released Hudak on her own recognizance and set her next hearing for March 8.
Arrested Monday
Hudak was arrested by police Monday; she resigned Tuesday. Police and school officials have yet to determine the total amount of money missing in the case.
Detective Sgt. Ray Holmes has noted, however, that he expects the figure to be at least $1,000.
He said Hudak confessed taking about $50 daily between December 2003 and Feb. 5 while working as the school treasurer and that she also admitted taking some money collected at school athletic events.
When it started
The thefts began in December shortly after former Frank Ohl cafeteria aide Terri Wolfe was sentenced to two years' probation for stealing $25,000 in lunch money, Holmes said.
Superintendent Stan Watson has noted that as Frank Ohl treasurer, Hudak worked with school officials to determine how much Wolfe had stolen. He said he did not know of any other connections between Wolfe and Hudak.
Watson said Hudak had worked in the district since 1988 and was "very much respected."
He added that the district will work to recoup any money stolen by Hudak, and it will re-examine its policies to determine how thefts can be prevented.
Watson also said that school officials also are working to be reimbursed by Wolfe.
