Salem police officer cited
SALEM -- A city police officer was cited after a traffic accident involving his cruiser and a car.
Patrolman Frank Dumovic, 53, was driving west on East State Street about 8:16 a.m. Tuesday when a car in front of him stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross the street.
Dumovic's cruiser hit the back of the stopped car, driven by Billi Jo Steves, 44, of High Street, Washingtonville.
Neither Dumovic nor Steves was hurt. Police cited Dumovic for failing to maintain an assured clear distance from the vehicle ahead.
Talk about black mason
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A talk about P. Ross Berry, a black Civil War-era mason responsible for some of the largest early construction jobs in the region, will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Lawrence County Historical Society, 408 N. Jefferson St., to celebrate Black History Month.
Vince Shivers, a photojournalist at WFMJ-TV, has done research on Berry and will speak. Shivers also will talk about recently discovered information regarding the Underground Railroad as it relates to Lawrence County. The lecture is free.
Officer's belongings found
STRUTHERS -- City police have recovered property stolen from a Beaver Township police car.
Police reports say a yellow book of citations and a metal pan with citations inside were found in a mail bin on Terrace Street over the weekend. The items belong to a detective with the Beaver Township Police Department.
Last week, a Dell laptop computer missing from the same Beaver Township cruiser, a black flashlight and a variety of paperwork were found inside a white plastic bag near the confessionals in St. Nicholas Church.
Anti-smoking event
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- New Castle High School students will spend the night at Slippery Rock University as part of an anti-smoking campaign.
The "Busted Youth Lock-in" is set for Feb. 20-21 at SRU's Robert N. Aebersold Student Recreation Center.
Identity theft on Internet
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- State police are warning people to be cautious about giving personal information out while on the Internet.
Police said a 50-year-old Edinburg woman was an identity theft victim after giving out information in a computer chat room.
A man requested she allow him to ship items to her house temporarily because he was moving between Maryland and Nigeria. More than $6,000 worth of DVD players, surround-sound audio systems, clothing, jewelry and other items were mailed to the woman with instructions to send it to Lagos, Nigeria. But before sending the items off, the woman got bills from 25 merchants.
Police said numerous credit cards using the victim's information were used to buy the items.
Items stolen from car
SALEM -- A Lisbon man told city police a radio worth about $170 and 30 CDs worth about $15 each were stolen from his car while it was parked on the 300 block of West Pershing Street.
The crime was reported at 3:42 a.m. today.
Drug charges against man
MERCER, Pa.-- State police arrested an East Liverpool man on drug charges after a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Findley Township.
Chris Hicks, 19, was a passenger in the vehicle stopped for several traffic violations around 1 p.m. Tuesday, police said, adding that they found suspected quantities of the drug Ecstasy, heroin and marijuana in Hicks' possession.
He is charged with possession with intent to deliver Ecstasy and heroin, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
