LISBON -- A North Canton contractor scheduled to repair and pave state Route 164 south of Lisbon this summer is getting an early start on the job.
Ohio Department of Transportation officials said Superior Paving & amp; Minerals Inc. is making temporary repairs to a nearly 15-mile stretch of the state highway between Lisbon and Salineville because the pavement is deteriorated.
Tom Corey of ODOT's Columbiana County office in Lisbon said the heavy rains through the spring and summer 2003, followed by a winter of extremely low temperatures, caused the pavement to break down.
"There are a lot of serious potholes, just hit and miss all along the highway," he said. "The pavement is 15 years old. That's why it was scheduled for paving this summer."
Corey said the paving crew will clean out the potholes, then fill them with a heated mixture called hot patch, and roll over it.
ODOT priority
Myron Pakush ODOT District 11 deputy director in New Philadelphia, said the contractors will resurface the highway as soon as weather permits. Until then, the highway will be a priority for ODOT workers in Columbiana County, and they will make repairs daily as needed.
Pakush said traffic will be maintained during the work, but motorists should expect some delays.
Superior Paving & amp; Minerals Inc. has a $1.4 million contract to pave state Route 164 and portions of state Route 154 and state Route 518.
The winding, two-lane highways are in Center, Wayne and Washington townships.
