CANONSBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Aleksey Morozov took a trip to Las Vegas. Rico Fata opted for traveling to parts unknown.
"I just got away," Fata said. "I went out of the state, just relaxed and tried to enjoy myself."
Most of the Penguins, in fact, got as far away from Pittsburgh as they could during the All-Star break.
It's hard to blame them. Pittsburgh (11-36-5-3) went into the break losers of 11 straight games -- tying a franchise record -- only the second double-digit losing streak in team history and the first since 1982-83.
If that weren't enough, the Penguins also set a low-water mark by losing their 10th in a row on home ice and can tie the NHL record of 11 with a loss tonight against Boston.
"If you start worrying about records, you're not focusing on the game at hand," Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik said. "I don't even know how many guys are aware of it, but I'm sure when they read the papers they'll all be aware of it."
Four teams share the record for consecutive home losses, but if Pittsburgh would become only the second franchise to do it in a season that wasn't it's first.
Boston (1924-25), Washington (1974-75) and Atlanta (1999-2000) all dropped 11 straight in their inaugural campaigns, while Ottawa did it in 1993-94, at the beginning of its second season of operation.
"We're doing everything we can," Pittsburgh coach Eddie Olczyk said. "We're not cutting corners on work, we're not cutting corners on preparation. It comes down to execution."
Despite losing 11 in a row overall the Penguins were showing signs of snapping out of their monthlong funk.
Pittsburgh nearly came back to beat Philadelphia at home Jan. 31 before losing by one and an empty net goal, then dropped a 4-1 decision in Boston the next day after blowing a 1-0 third period lead and giving up a pair of empty-net goals at the end.
Pittsburgh's best showing may have been Feb. 3 in its final game before the break. After allowing two goals in the first two-plus minutes to Montreal, the Penguins came back and took a 3-2 lead in the second period before surrendering the advantage in a 4-3 loss.
Now after a week off, the team will return to carrying the burden of a long losing streak into a game against a team two points out of first place in the Northeast Division.
But the week away from the game may have added some much-needed perspective.
"This is a new slate for us, hopefully," Fata said. "The old stats, I don't think we're going to look at them. We're just going to go out there, play the way we know we can and try to get a win."
