Woman reports rape
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 38-year-old woman who ran crying into Reeds Chapel on Jacobs Road said she was raped at a house on Miltonia Avenue.
The woman told police that she had spent four days with a man she met after donating blood and was raped by him when she tried to leave. The woman said she ran to the church when the man became distracted on the phone about 10 a.m. Saturday.
No arrests had been made as of this morning, and the case remains under investigation.
Authorities rule arson
YOUNGSTOWN -- The fire at a vacant house at 2112 Donald Ave. has been ruled arson, the fire department said. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke when called to the scene at 2:35 p.m. Sunday. The house was considered a total loss, with damage estimated at $20,000.
No injuries were reported at 243 W. Dennick Ave., where a fire started in the dining area at 12:05 a.m. Saturday. Damage was set at $5,000 and the cause is listed as suspicious, the fire department said.
Boccieri ships out for duty
VIENNA -- State Rep. John Boccieri of New Middletown, D-66th, is one of 33 members of the Air Force Reserve's 910th Airlift Wing who shipped out Saturday morning for a 60-day tour of duty in Kuwait.
They are among about 238 members of the 910th who were activated in early December 2003 and were assigned to duty at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station awaiting deployment. Their activation orders are for one year, but deployments will be sporadic, according to a 910th spokesman.
The 910th has 471 members activated, the largest number at one time in the history of the air base in Vienna, the spokesman said. The 910th has 1,432 members.
2 charged in robbery try
LIBERTY -- Two men are accused of trying to rob a township convenience store and handcuffing the cashier to a shelf.
Aaron Brion Hollis, 25, of Akron, and Jason Amir Moore, 26, of Cleveland, were arrested Saturday on felony charges of aggravated robbery, carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a weapon under disability and a misdemeanor charge of unlawful restraint.
Police say the men, wearing dark clothes and hooded ski masks, entered the Stop Mart, 4495 Loganway Ave., shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday and ordered the clerk into the back of the store, where they handcuffed her to a set of shelves.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol stopped Hollis and Moore near the Portage County line, and recovered weapons and ski masks in the car, police said. The men were in the Trumbull County jail pending arraignment today.
Woman reports attack
LIBERTY -- Police are searching for a man accused of forcing his way into a township woman's home and forcing her to perform oral sex.
The 52-year-old Naylor Lloyd Road woman told police she opened her door at 1:10 a.m. Sunday because she thought it was her brother knocking, but instead a man she knows forced his way inside. The man broke the phone before threatening to kill the woman if she didn't comply, she said.
The woman was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for a split lip.
Jailed on Army charge
LIBERTY -- A routine traffic stop landed a woman in jail on a charge of deserting the Army.
Police stopped Kyle Lisa Van Norsdell, 46, of Elm Street, Youngstown, on Belmont Avenue on Sunday afternoon. A check on her driver's license turned up a warrant from the Army on the desertion charge.
