HOUSTON -- Jason Maxiell scored 14 points, including a dunk and two free throws in the final 1:25, and No. 10 Cincinnati ended a two-game losing streak with a 54-51 victory over Houston on Saturday.
Held to their lowest point total of the season, the Bearcats (16-3, 7-2 Conference USA) barely held off the pesky Cougars (8-12, 2-7), who led by a point before Maxiell came through.
Maxiell, who played just six minutes of the first half because of three quick fouls, was an inside force as soon as he returned early in the second half.
After Marcus Oliver's layup put Houston ahead 51-50 with 1:52 left, Maxiell's dunk off a missed shot with 1:25 left gave the Bearcats the lead for good. He then hit two free throws with seven seconds left.
Lanny Smith's last-ditch 3-point try for Houston fell short.

Cincinnati, which had lost three of five after winning its first 13 games, was coming off losses to Charlotte and Xavier. The Bearcats upped their series edge against Houston to 21-1 and haven't lost to the Cougars in 31 years.
