HIRAM COLLEGE Former secretary of Navy to discuss leadership traits
HIRAM -- John Dalton, the 70th secretary of the U.S. Navy, will speak at Hiram College on Tuesday as part of the institution's Creating Excellent Organizations (CEO) program. Dalton will speak at 12:30 in the Hiram College Kennedy Center Ballroom, state Route 700. The title of his address is "The Timeless Traits of Leadership."
Nominated by President Clinton and sworn in July 22, 1993, Dalton served as Secretary of the Navy until 1998. His major accomplishments were promoting American sea power and championing a bipartisan maritime strategy.
For his efforts, Dalton was awarded the prestigious International Security Leadership Award from the National Security Caucus. Previous recipients of the award include Presidents Bush and Reagan. Dalton is the only service secretary to receive the award.
Dalton is the President of IPG Photonics Corp. of Oxford, Mass. The company designs and manufactures fiber amplifiers and fiber lasers. Born in New Orleans, La., Dalton graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy and went on to earn an MBA from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce.
