GIRLS BASKETBALL Spartans clinch Federal crown
Chaney, Canfield and Poland posted victories.
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman High girls basketball team is one-for-one in the Federal League.
Amber Bland scored 27 points and Emily Hays added 13 as the state-ranked Spartans (17-0) defeated Canton McKinley 64-37 Saturday to win the Federal League championship.
Boardman and Austintown Fitch are competing in the Federal League for the first time after moving from the Steel Valley Conference.
Boardman's victory over McKinley came in the second round of the Federal League tournament, advancing the Spartans into the championship game Friday against North Canton Hoover at the Canton Civic Center.
Regardless of the outcome against Hoover, Boardman totaled enough points in the league's scoring system to secure the title.
Hoover advanced to the title game, which will be played at 7:45 p.m., by beating Massillon Jackson, 73-50.
Meredith Whitehead led Canton McKinley (5-12) with nine points.
Massillon Perry 66, Austintown Fitch 27
MASSILLON -- The Panthers (13-5) outscored Fitch 30-5 in the fourth quarter to wrap up the second-round victory in the Federal League tournament.
Debbie Beatty scored 15 points and Heather Graham 11 for Perry.
Bre Alleman led Fitch (2-17) with six points.
Chaney 65, Newton Falls 46
NEWTON FALLS -- Adrienne Peace scored nine of her 13 points in the first half as Chaney took a 37-18 lead en route to the victory.
Lavielle Trevathan led the Cowgirls (5-12) with 16 points, including eight in the first half, and 12 rebounds. Tierra Jones had 11 points and Courtney Williams added 10.
Also for Chaney, Quiana Faison had 13 rebounds and Tiawna Rodgers six assists.
Molly Lenarcic scored 13 for the Tigers (2-14) and Courtney Pelyak added 10.
Canfield 61, Niles 49
CANFIELD -- Corey Hoffman had 14 points, nine in the fourth quarter and 11 rebounds to lead the Cardinals in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Nikki Garrett also scored 14 points for Canfield (13-5, 9-2), while Stephanie Zunic added 11.
Niles (8-8, 3-7) was led by Stephanie Parish with 13 points and Stacia Ray with 11.
Poland 57, Alliance 44
POLAND -- Erin Hawkins hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter as Poland took a commanding 26-11 lead in a MAC game.
Hawkins finished with nine points and 10 rebounds and junior Dee Muransky added a career-high 20 points for the Bulldogs (11-6, 7-3). Steffi Graf added 10 points.
Jan Kehres led Alliance (4-13, 0-9) with 12 points.
Western Reserve 45, Youngstown Christian 37
YOUNGSTOWN -- Erica Zimmerman had 12 points and Becky Kutsko added 10 more as the Blue Devils (4-12) took a 26-12 halftime lead.
Danielle Pecchia led Youngstown Christian (11-4) with 17 points.
