MAC/CITY Poland's MAC streak snapped by Alliance
The Bulldogs hadn't lost a conference game since the 2000-01 season.
POLAND -- The Poland High boys basketball team lost its first Metro Athletic Conference game since the 2000-01 season as visiting Alliance held off the Bulldogs, 77-66, on Friday.
The Aviators built a 47-38 lead by the end of the third quarter, then outscored the Bulldogs 30-28 in the final eight minutes.
Alliance (9-6, 4-5) had a 41-22 rebounding advantage and was led by Austin Banks and Bylynn Hatcher with 29 and 20 points, respectively.
Chad Fender led the Bulldogs (11-3, 8-1) with 24 points and three steals. Jim Shurilla added 15 points and Dan Bertolini finished with 13 points, 12 assists and three steals. Nick Henry had nine rebounds and three steals.
Canfield 51, Niles 47
CANFIELD -- The Cardinals (13-3, 9-1 MAC) held a 36-29 lead after three quarters and held on for the victory.
Frank Turocy paced Canfield with 17 points, which included three 3-point baskets.
Dan Jones took scoring honors for the Red Dragons (4-11, 3-6) with 25 points.
Howland 70, Salem 69
HOWLAND -- Howland's Ryan Johnson hit two free throws with two seconds left as the Tigers overcame Salem's fourth-quarter rally.
The Tigers stole the inbound pass to seal the game at the buzzer.
Howland (5-12, 3-7 MAC) made 33-of-41 free throws, compared to 13-of-18 for Salem.
Neil Claggett scored 15 points -- including 11-of-11 from the line -- for the Tigers.
Jeff Proctor had 12 and Dario Hadzovic had 11.
Cody Chappell and Johnson each added 10.
Joe Smith scored 14 points and Landon Heath added 13 for Salem (6-10, 5-5).
Canton Timken 71, Wilson 56
CANTON -- The Trojans recorded their fourth straight City Series win at the Canton Field House.
The Redmen (4-11, 2-4) fell behind 37-18 at the break and couldn't recover.
Chauncey Whitlow sparked Wilson with 23 points and Bruce Smith chipped in with 14.
Eric Arine led the Trojans (6-7, 4-0) with 24 points.
