Profession liturgy set
VILLA MARIA, Pa. -- Sister Mary Slattery will make temporary profession as a member of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary at 2:30 p.m. Sunday during the Liturgy of First Profession in Magnificat Chapel at Villa Maria, Pa. The celebrant will be the Rev. Joseph J. Fortuna, pastor of Ascension of Our Lord Church in Cleveland, where Sister Mary is a parishioner. Sister Mary became a candidate in 2000. She continued in ministry as a staff member for Heartbeats, a ministry of the order in Cleveland, until 2002. She then became a novice. She is a volunteer in Cleveland at the Westside Catholic Center and Shelter, Villa Montessori Center, and at Ascension Church, where she is a catechist. Sister Mary is also a commissioned lay leader of prayer for the Diocese of Youngstown.
Black history event
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mount Sinai Baptist Church, 328 S. Forest St., will hold a prayer breakfast to celebrate Black History Month at 10 a.m. today. The cost is $5 for adults and $2 for children. A musical program will be at 5 p.m. Sunday.
Seniors to be lauded
LIBERTY -- Mount Moriah Fire Baptized Holiness Church, 84 Bright Ave., Campbell, will have its 11th annual senior citizen program at 11 a.m. today at St. Mark Center, 3601 Logan Ave., Liberty. Honorees are: James Smith, Bernice Smith, Herbert Luckey Sr., Mable Luckey, Jeraleen Lacey, Dorothy Williams, Frank Alston, Irene Alston, Willie D. Plater and Gloria Snowden. Donations are $10 for adults and $6 for children 5-10 years old.
Lenten concert
CAMPBELL -- The choir of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, 301 Struthers-Liberty Road, will host a Lenten concert at 5 p.m. Feb. 15. Refreshments will follows. Dr. Nicola Nicoloff will direct.
Volunteer awards program
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, 252 E. Wood St., will hold a feast day dinner and volunteer awards program at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 15. Tickets for adults are $10 and tickets for children 6-12 are $5. Call (330) 782-7881.
Peace speaker
BOARDMAN -- The Rev. Bernard Survil of the Diocese of Greensburg, Pa., and a member of Pax Christy USA, a Catholic peace organization, will speak at the 6 p.m. Mass on Feb. 21 and the Masses at 7:30, 9 and 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Father Survil recently demonstrated at the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, the former School of the Americas, in Columbus, Ga. The priest will soon begin a three-month sentence at federal prison for crossing a line during a protest at the military training camp.
Purpose program begins
NORTH LIMA -- North Lima Mennonite Church, 90 Mennonite Drive, will sponsor a spiritual growth campaign called "40 Days of Purpose" based on Rick Warren's book, "The Purpose Driven Life."
The program begins at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 15 with the sermon, "Don't Waste Your Life." A class begins at 6 p.m. The series will continue Sundays through April 4. Call (330) 549-2333.
Southern gospel concert
