KIDS' FURNITURE
Safety tips
If you're in the market for some kids' d & eacute;cor, make sure to select furniture that's sturdy and safe. The American Furniture Manufacturers Association offers the following tips when buying furniture for the little people in your life:
Furniture surfaces should be smooth without rough edges or splinters.
Nails and screws should be tight and unexposed.
Be wary of antique furniture. It might contain lead paint.
Don't use bunk beds for children younger than 6. Bunk beds should always have guardrails on each side with no more than 15 inches open at each end.
Dresser drawers should slide out easily. If a child yanks too hard on a drawer, the dresser could tumble over.
If you purchase a bookcase, secure the top of the unit to the wall to keep it from accidentally toppling over.
Storage or toy chests should have safety latches to prevent lids from slamming shut on little fingers.
Don't sit a large-sized television on a child's entertainment center. Televisions can fall forward if not properly supported.
Do not allow children to play on reclining chairs.
