Firefighters rescue dog that fell into river
WARREN -- An 8-year-old Russian wolfhound dog was rescued from the frigid waters of the Mahoning River on Tuesday by city firefighters.
The dog had been swimming frantically for at least 20 minutes after falling through the ice 30 feet from the Packard Park shoreline late Tuesday afternoon.
After receiving an emergency call at 5:38 p.m., firefighters used a Life Ramp -- a 30-foot-long inflatable tube -- to walk out on the river and grab the dog. They brought him to shore about 6 p.m. and wrapped him in blankets.
The dog was taken to the Town and Country Pet Clinic in Howland. Its owner, Jim Valesky of Mahoning Avenue, reported Tuesday evening that the dog was in good condition, the fire department said.
