DISTRICT Cards' Zidian has big role; Ursuline loses to McDowell
Fitch slipped to 10-4 after losing to Hudson, while Canfield improved to 12-3.
HUDSON -- Senior forward David Zidian scored eight of his 21 points in the fourth quarter Tuesday as the Cardinal Mooney High boys basketball team pulled away for a 76-60 victory over Western Reserve Academy.
Jeff Hehr and Ron Stoops each added 17 points for the Cardinals (10-3), who outscored Reserve 22-13 in the final period. Desmond Morrow had 10 points.
Devin Thomas had 25 points to lead Reserve (8-6).
Erie McDowell 64, Ursuline 37
YOUNGSTOWN -- Tyler Stuczinsky, a Villanova recruit, scored 20 points to pace the Trojans (19-1).
Sean Smiley added 16 points while Adam Morrison had 14 points and seven rebounds.
Only five players scored for the Irish (5-10), led by Brett Neely with 12 points. Branndon Braxton had 10 points and eight rebounds.
After trailing 19-12 after one quarter, the Irish scored seven points in the second frame to trail 33-19 at the break.
Hudson 63, Fitch 54
HUDSON -- The Falcons fell behind 31-24 and couldn't recover.
Terrell Eargle sparked Fitch (10-4) with 27 points and six steals. Mark Aikens chipped in with 14 points. Stas Cherney grabbed 12 rebounds.
Salem 68, Struthers 58
SALEM -- T.J. Decrow scored 17 points, one of three players in double figures, for the Quakers (6-9, 5-4 Metro Athletic Conference). Tyler Pierce added 14 points and Tom Jesko 11.
Struthers (3-12, 1-8) put four players in double figures, led by Dave Mathews' 13. He was followed by Mike Duponty with 12, Rick Kukura with 11 and Rob Mistovich with 10.
Howland 61, Niles 57
NILES -- Neil Claggett and Ryan Johnson each scored 16 points and Cody Chappell added 10 as Howland (4-12, 2-7) edged Niles.
Dan Jones poured in 27 points and Kevin Robertson 23 for Niles (4-10, 3-5).
Canfield 56, Alliance 47
ALLIANCE -- Andrew Havas scored 11 to lead the Cardinals (12-3, 8-1).
The Aviators are 8-6, 3-5.
Liberty 66, Champion 54
YOUNGSTOWN -- Joe Lopez, a 6-foot senior guard, scored 18 points with eight rebounds and four assists as Liberty turned back Champion in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Joel Marshall scored 13 points and Bradley Fletcher had 12 more for the Leopards (11-3, 5-3).
Liberty scored 22 points in the first quarter and recorded 24 points in the fourth.
Adam Lantz scored 15 points and Drew Szepietowski had 10 points for the Flashes (0-13, 0-7), who trailed 42-40 entering the final quarter.
Hubbard 61, West Branch 51
HUBBARD -- Jacoby Morris scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures as Hubbard beat West Branch in a non-conference game.
Jeff Jablonski and Matt Yanik each added 14 points for the Eagles (7-6), while Todd Coonce had 12.
For West Branch (4-10), Ryan Casteel scored 15 points and Shane Young 11.
Southeast 76, Waterloo 67
RAVENNA -- The Pirates (11-2) outscored Waterloo 14-4 in an extra quarter to prevail.
Pat Divoky took scoring honors for Southeast with 35 points. Sean Cornell and Micah Hendron chipped in with 16 and 15 respectively.
Bryan Knapp led Waterloo with 19 points. Jeff Willis finished with 15.

CHAMPION -- Brittny Humphrey scored 12 points and Lena Esmail added 10 points and six rebounds as Liberty defeated Champion 47-34 on Monday night.
