DAYTON -- Youngstown State lost to Dayton 5-2 in a non-conference match Sunday.
In singles, YSU's (1-2) Gina Peretti defeated Kate Donovan 6-3, 7-5, and Nicole Muzechuk defeated Sarah Miller 6-3, 7-5. The Penguins' Whitney Thomas lost to Erin Kirkland, 6-1, 6-0; Heather Hagood lost to Courtney McDowell, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0; Karen Najbert lost to Michelle Carroll 4-6, 7-6, 10-8, and Andrea Dixon lost to Kara Metzger, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, Dayton's Kirkland and McDowell beat Najbert and Hagood, 8-1; Donovan and Metzger defeated Thomas and Peretti, 8-6, and Mellion and Miller beat Muzechuk and Dixon, 8-4.
YSU plays host to UW-Milwaukee Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. at the Boardman Tennis Center.
Men's tennis
BOARDMAN -- Seniors Raul Pepino and Kevin Schaffert were double winners as the Penguins (1-1) defeated Cleveland State 5-2 at the Boardman Tennis Center.
Cleveland State won the doubles point, but YSU won five of six singles matches.
At No. 1 doubles, Pepino and Schaffert defeated Jay Tee and Eric Winn, 8-6. At No. 2, CSU's Dan Singer and Paul Haley defeated Brian Meek and Jason Trapp 8-6, and at No. 3 Jordan Reynolds and Brett Aronson beat Tom Barth and Justin Beck 8-6.
In singles, Pepino defeated Tee 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1; Schaffert beat Winn 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2; Meek beat Singer 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3; Barth defeated Aronson 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4; Trapp beat Haley 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 5, and Reynolds beat Beck 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.
YSU coach Eric Ronan said his seniors showed great leadership and it was a big win for the team early in the season.
"I am very proud of my senior leaders and the rest of my team," he said. "I would like to thank the fans, both YSU and Cleveland State. It was one of the biggest crowds I've ever seen and that helped us come back and win."

Jr. Phantoms win
BOARDMAN -- After falling behind 3-2 in the first period, the Youngstown Junior Phantoms (Squirts) scored 6 unanswered goals to win their sixth straight game, 8-3, Saturday over Winterhurst at the Ice Zone.
Jared Taylor and Riley Emery each scored five points. Taylor scored three goals -- he has 23 for the season -- and Emery scored two (12). Other goals were scored by Joel Mathews, Dalton Maurer, and Nick Malvasi. Assists were recorded by Malvasi, Brandon Nightingale, Neil Allen and Justin Burk. Marcus Rivera, Mike Roscoe, Mike Haurin and Max Pikunis led the defense.
The Jr. Phantoms (9-6-1, 6-5-1 CSHL) play at Winterhurst on Saturday.
Geneva beats Daemen
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Geneva College jumped out to a 47-17 halftime lead en route to an 81-54 victory over Daemen Saturday.
Thirteen players scored for Geneva (10-12, 3-6 AMC North), led by Stefan Grundberg with 19 points.
Steve Chandlier scored 17 points for Daemen (17-7, 8-1), which had been ranked 24th.

USATF complies
DENVER -- USA Track & amp; Field will provide the U.S. Olympic Committee with the complete appeals opinion in Jerome Young's doping case, clearing the way for an international review of the case.
Young tested positive for steroids in 1999, but was cleared on appeal and went on to win a relay gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
USATF, citing confidentiality rules, refused to provide details in the case or acknowledge Young was the athlete in question despite repeated demands from the IOC and track's world governing body.
In a letter sent to the USOC on Sunday, USATF president Bill Roe and executive director Craig Masback confirmed Young is the athlete and agreed to forward the complete version of the Doping Appeals Board ruling.
Russian setsnew indoor mark
MOSCOW -- Russia's Olga Kotliarova broke the long-standing indoor women's 600 meter world record by nearly two seconds Sunday at the Russian Winter IAAF indoor meet.
Kotliarova was timed in 1 minute, 23.44 seconds in the seldom contested race, beating the previous record of 1:25.46, set by Russian Lyubov Kiryukhina in 1987.
McBride scoresin debut
LONDON -- Brian McBride scored in his debut with Fulham on Saturday, beating goalkeeper and U.S. teammate Kasey Keller in the 67th minute in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham in the Premier League.
McBride came off the bench for the winning goal.
Winter sports
* GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany -- Hermann Maier won Sunday's super giant slalom to capture the World Cup title in the discipline and take command of the overall standings.
The Austrian covered the course in 1 minute, 18.09 seconds for his third victory this season.
Maier regained the title he had won four years in a row before he nearly lost his right leg in a motorcycle accident in August 2001.
* HAUS IM ENNSTAL, Austria -- Germany's Maria Riesch and France's Carole Montillet finished with identical times to share first place in a World Cup super giant slalom.
The winners were timed in 1 minute, 25.04 seconds.
