NHL Penguins fail to hold late lead; Bruins win, 4-1
Glen Murray scored three times in Boston's four-goal third period.
BOSTON (AP) -- Glen Murray downplayed his natural hat trick.
"You just have to be lucky sometimes," Murray said. "It was just one of those days when everything was going in."
Murray scored three times in the third period -- his fifth hat trick in the NHL -- to help the Boston Bruins beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 on Sunday.
He has scored nine goals in his last eight games, and Boston is 18-6-6-3 when Murray records a point.
In the last four games, Murray has three game-winning goals and a tying goal. Before that, he had gone 15 games with only three goals.
"You ask anyone, when you get a couple of goals in a row it seems like you find the right spot," Murray said. "It wasn't going in for about a month even though I was getting chances. It goes in cycles, I guess."
On a roll
Murray has scored six of the Bruins' last seven goals, and has 21 overall.
"I knew it was only a matter of time for him," coach Mike Sullivan said. "He's one of the best goal scorers in the league."
The Bruins have won three straight, and are unbeaten in their last four.
Murray tied it at 1 on a power play at 6:01 of the third period, and put Boston ahead with 5:46 to play.
"On his first goal, I went down too early on the play and he had an open net," Penguins goalie Sebastien Caron said. "On the second, I didn't move quick enough. I made mistakes and they ended up in the back of the net."
Murray's third goal, an empty netter, came with a minute left. Brian Rolston scored his 15th goal of the season, also into an empty net, with 23 seconds remaining.
Andrew Raycroft made 38 saves for the Bruins, allowing only Aleksey Morozov's power-play goal in the first period. On Saturday, Raycroft made Montreal 1-0 for his third shutout of the season.
"Guys are going to make mistakes and they'll get chances to score. But tonight they weren't able to put any in," Raycroft said. "All in all we had a good weekend, a good two wins."
It was Pittsburgh's fifth straight road loss. The Penguins have two victories in their last 18 games.
