NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Mayor Wayne Alexander expects to have a recommendation for city police chief by Monday.
Alexander said his search committee will interview the seven applicants Friday. The mayor said he is leaving the choice up to the eight-member committee, which will grade each applicant during the interviews.
Alexander said his only requirement is that the new chief be on board with his war on drugs.
"I want to know what that person's plans are and make them aware if they cannot fulfill their duties they will be replaced," Alexander said.
The recommendation must be approved by city council.
On the committee
Brian Welsh, director of the Lawrence County Family Center, is chairman of the search committee. Other members include a member of the clergy, a U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency agent, an ex-police officer and city residents.
Alexander wrote in a letter to police officers that the chief will be chosen on the candidate's record and reputation of faithfully serving the citizens of New Castle, ability to meet criteria set by city ordinance for the job, leadership qualities and content of character.
No unprofessional behavior
The mayor went on to state that he heard rumors that "there is some concern among police department personnel that a new police chief will exact some retribution from those fellow officers who were not supportive of his or her candidacy."
"Let me assure all candidates and police department personnel that retribution on the part of the new police chief -- or insubordination of police personnel to the new police chief -- will not be tolerated," Alexander wrote.
