NEW CASTLE After gunshots and car chase, man faces numerous charges

A Youngstown man also was arrested.
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A 27-year-old man faces many charges in connection with gunshots on Cedar Street early today.
Police said Michael L. Williams of Beech Street contends someone in a passing car shot at him as he was entering his own vehicle. Williams shot back, then led police on a chase through the city, they said.
Police said Williams told them he ran because he was a felon and did not want to admit he had fired a weapon, something prohibited for felons. A 27-year-old Youngstown man in Williams' car was also arrested, but no charges were filed.
Williams was charged with carrying a firearm without a license, possessing instruments of crime, recklessly endangering another person, a felon prohibited from carrying a firearm, fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving without a license and firing a weapon in the city limits.
Police said they received reports that shots were fired at 12:48 a.m. from a green car traveling north on Cedar Street. Pennsylvania State Police were also in the area and helped city police chase the car. Police said two men got out of the car on Liberty Street and started running. Police eventually arrested the men in the 600 block of Cedar Street.
Police later questioned Williams, who contended he was called to a home to provide a friend with body armor and a gun. As he left, he noticed a car slowly approaching and he ducked as shots were fired, then shot back, police said. Spent 9 mm casings found in Williams pocket appear to match ones found on the ground near the Cedar Street home, they added.
Police also said they confiscated about $1,500 from Williams after his arrest.
Williams was arraigned this morning. His bail information was not available.
