Leukemia fund-raiser
Schools in Mahoning, Trumbull and eight other northern Ohio counties will participate in Olive Garden's Pasta for Pennies program by collecting spare change for the Leukemia & amp; Lymphoma Society through Feb. 20, as part of a nationwide campaign that has collected more than $17 million since its inception 10 years ago. The class collecting the most money in each school receives an Olive Garden pasta party. Marking career tech week
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center will commemorate National Career & amp; Technical Education Week from Sunday to Feb. 14. The theme is "Career Tech: The Path to Success." Activities include: recognition of outstanding students at the MCCTC Board of Education meeting Monday; the fourth annual Technical Training & amp; Job Fair on Wednesday; a dance featuring A.C. Prospective student day
CANTON -- The Malone College Office of Admissions will host a Discover Day for high school juniors and seniors Feb. 16 on campus. Opportunities include an admissions presentation, a tour of campus and lunch with a professor from the prospective student's chosen major. Kent State project funds
KENT -- As part of the 2004 Omnibus Appropriations Act passed in January, Kent State University will receive more than $2 million in funding. The projects are: the Northeast Ohio Consortium for Biopreparedness, $750,000, to gather academic, industrial, community and government agencies as a consortium focused on biopreparedness issues and training; the ongoing GED Scholars Project, $500,000, to provide financial and academic support to promising GED graduates attending the Kent and Stark campuses of the university; the Institute for Library and Informational Literacy Education, $750,000, to continue its focus on collaboration among K-12 teachers and library and media specialists to advance information literacy in the school curriculum; and the Kent State Intermodal Facility, $375,000, for a parking and transportation facility that will serve vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic for Kent State, the city of Kent and a proposed conference center.
Public service center
ALLIANCE -- The U.S. Congress has passed an appropriations bill that earmarks $1 million to the Mount Union College for a Center for Public Service. Mount Union plans to use the money to provide the framework for a program that will raise awareness of the need for public servants nationwide.
Akron visitation day
AKRON -- The University of Akron will host a President's Day Visitation for prospective students Feb. 16. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Students can tour campus, have lunch and meet with faculty as well as representatives from offices of admissions, financial aid, residence life and housing, and the University Honors Program.
