PBS looks at plight of black nurses



CLEVELAND -- "Healing Others, Healing Ourselves," a documentary about the struggle of black nurses for legitimacy, debuts at 10 p.m. Thursday on PBS Channels 45 & amp; 49.
The program was produced by Cuyahoga Community College with the Crile Archives.
History, achievements and struggles are discussed by those interviewed. They include Dr. Darlene Clark Hine, who is John C. Hannah Distinguished Professor of History at Michigan State University, and Brig. Gen. Hazel Johnson-Brown, who was the first black woman to receive rank as a General and who led the Army Nurse Corps from 1979 to 1983. Young nurses at the beginning of their careers also are interviewed.
Rare archival film is included in the documentary. Producer is James Banks, professor emeritus and director of the Crile Archives, a collection of 20th-century military history.
"Healing Others, Healing Ourselves" also will be shown at 9 p.m. Thursday on Cleveland PBS station WVIZ.
