Defibrillators on I-80
HARRISBURG (AP) -- A stretch of Interstate 80 has received some potentially lifesaving equipment. The state Department of Transportation has installed automated external defibrillators at five rest areas along I-80 in Pennsylvania. The devices shock hearts back into rhythm after sudden cardiac arrest, during which the heart stops beating because of irregular nerve impulses. The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Cardiology donated the equipment. The Pennsylvania Turnpike introduced AEDs at its 21 service plazas in February 2003.
