ICL/TCL Western Reserve cruises past South Range to remain in top spot
The Blue Devils remain unbeaten in league play after their 72-47 win.
NORTH LIMA -- Mark Dickerhoof scored 16 points Friday as the Western Reserve High boys basketball team increased its lead in the Inter-County League race with a 72-47 victory over South Range.
The Blue Devils (10-4, 8-0) won their eighth straight game with Jake Zatchok scoring 14.
Western Reserve leads second-place McDonald and Mathews by two games in the loss column and four in the win column
Mario Angiuli and Danny Holloway led the Raiders (2-9, 1-5) with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Lowellville 68, Mathews 65
LOWELLVILLE -- The Rockets trailed by four points after one quarter, but then resorted to pressure, which helped deliver their third win in 11 games.
Lowellville's pressure on Mathews resulted in turnovers, which helped the Rockets outscore the Mustangs 20-13 in the second quarter.
Mathews (5-5, 4-2 ICL) caught up to the Rockets (3-8, 2-4) after the third quarter, 43-43, but Lowellville quickly went ahead and never trailed in the fourth.
Jack Noble, a 6-2 senior forward, scored 20 points and grabbed 13 of 30 rebounds for Lowellville.
Junior guard Vince Broll added 15 points, including 10-of-12 from the foul line. Also for the winners, Danny Bond had 11 points and Bryan Meehan 10.
For Mathews, Chris Vesey poured in 18 points, Ian Paddock 16 and Matt Weymer 14.
McDonald 58, Jackson-Milton 56 OT
McDONALD -- Junior Mark Macali made a putback at the buzzer to decide McDonald's overtime victory.
James Beedle made two of three free throw attempts to send the game into the extra session at 49-all.
Macali finished with 16 points, while Nick Testa scored 15, Beedle 14 and Ken McKay 10 for the Blue Devils (7-4, 4-2 ICL).
Tim Shaw and Zack Nicholas combined for 31 points for Jackson-Milton (4-7, 2-4).
Mineral Ridge 69,Springfield 66
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Vance Kiersey's 19 points powered the Rams (5-7, 3-4 ICL). Brandon Linert scored 14 points, while Jason Garland and Nick Diana contributed 12 apiece.
For Springfield (5-7, 2-5), Tobey Culler pumped in 22 points, while Marc Russell netted 15.
Sebring 50, Southern 39
SEBRING -- David Scarpitti pumped in 20 points as the Trojans (12-1, 7-1) remained in first place in the Tri-County League.
Scarpitti's output included nine of 10 at the foul line.
Matt Ferguson added 10 points for the winners, who were 17-of-19 at the free-throw line. Joe Amabeli pulled down 10 rebounds, while Dan Scarpitti made four assists and four steals.
Josh Diaz's 14 points paced the Indians (6-6, 1-6). Rick Tanner had 11 points, five assists and four steals, while Randy Pitts had eight points and seven rebounds.
United 58, Crestview 53
EAST FAIRFIELD -- Corey Manfull had 14 points, while Dale Woolf and Mitch Phillis had 12 apiece for the Eagles.
United (10-1, 6-1) is a half-game back of Sebring entering tonight's game with Lisbon.
Ross Mercer, a 6-2 senior small forward, scored 15 points, while Kirk Pflugh, a senior guard, added 12 for Crestview (9-4, 4-4).
Lisbon 55, Columbiana 50
LISBON -- The Blue Devils (9-3, 5-2) led 24-21 at the break and the Clippers didn't get closer.
Lucian Smith sparked Lisbon with 20 points and five assists. Jay Yorty and Mike McDevitt, who grabbed 12 of 31 rebounds and had four steals, added 11 points apiece.
The Blue Devils outrebounded Columbiana, 31-17.
Austin Couchenour and Cale Miller led the Clippers (9-5, 5-3) with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
