AREA COLLEGES Local players, coaches try to end Hiram's loss streak

HIRAM -- The Hiram College women's basketball team, which has two coaches and three players from the Youngstown area, seek to snap a 10-game losing streak tonight when the Terriers play host to the College of Wooster at 7:30 p.m.
The Terriers, coached by Anne Haynam, a graduate of Badger High, and assisted by Don Feren of Canfield, have struggled to a 3-15 record this season, including an 0-10 mark in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Haynam, in her fifth season, is also assisted by Lenora Sundstrom.
Feren is a former South Range High boys and girls basketball coach in his second season at Hiram. He also serves as the South Range School District's athletic director.
Area standouts
Hiram's area players are Allison Davis, a 5-foot-6 guard-forward from Boardman; Valerie Goudy, a 5-6 junior guard from South Range, and Abbey Gorby, a 5-5 guard-forward from East Palestine.
Davis has started all 18 games, averaging 3.7 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest. Goudy, a part-time starter, is averaging 2.6 points and 1.8 rebounds, while Gorby, a substitute, is averaging 2.3 points and 1.3 rebounds. Goudy also has 22 steals, Davis 20 and Gorby 16.
Davis is coming off a 10-point effort, including two 3-point goals, in the Terriers' 71-47 loss to Denison last Saturday.
Hiram's top players have been Amanda Hummel, Cassie Bedard, Jessica Harris and Hanna Wright. Hummel is averaging 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds, while Bedard is at 7.9 and 4.2, Harris 6.2 and 6.4 and Wright 4.0 and 4.8.
Wooster is 9-10 overall and 3-7 in the NCAC under the guidance of coach Lisa Campanell Komara, a graduate of Beaver Local High.
Campanell Komara, who formerly coached at Bethany (W. Va.), is in her seventh season at Wooster.
