WARREN Woman, 23, stabbed in fight at nightclub
Police have been called to the club numerous times on reports of fights.
WARREN -- Several people were injured during a fight at a U.S. Route 422 nightclub that started on the dance floor and spilled into the parking lot.
Brittney Pegram, 23, of Leo Avenue, Youngstown, was in the emergency room at St. Elizabeth Health Center this morning after being stabbed in the back early Sunday at 77 Soul.
Another woman, Florence M. Rivers, 22, of Peace Street, was treated at St. Joseph Health Center.
The club's owner couldn't be reached this morning.
Police were called to the club after a melee erupted.
Rivers told police that while she was dancing, she bumped into Pegram, excused herself and then Pegram broke a bottle on her head. Rivers said she remembers falling and was kicked all over her body.
The fight then moved to the parking lot, where friends and relatives of Rivers' began fighting, the report said.
Several other people also suffered injuries in the melee, but it's unclear from the report how they were injured.
Police have asked the club's owner, Lashawn Ziegler, to speak to detectives.
Previous problems
Police have been called to the nightclub many times over the last year on reports of fights and gunfire, prompting meetings among some city officials to discuss concerns of nearby businesses.
The owner of the Travelodge, whose parking lot adjoins the club, wrote a letter in November to the previous administration threatening to close his business and take legal action if the city didn't take steps to address problems at the club.
Neither Mayor Michael J. O'Brien nor Safety-Service Director Doug Franklin could be reached.
In November, Ziegler told The Vindicator that a security firm from Akron patrols the club parking lot, but that he fears the guards are not being taken seriously because they don't carry guns and lack arrest powers.
Ziegler has said that he wanted to hire off-duty city police officers or deputy sheriffs to provide security. Because of the departments' insurance policies, officers aren't allowed to work security at liquor establishments.
