Shots fired at councilman
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Columbus man was arrested Saturday morning after police said he shot several times at City Councilman Clarence Bowles. Bernard Barnes Jr., 22, is being held in the Mahoning County Jail on a charge of felonious assault. Police reports list addresses for Barnes on West LaClede Avenue and in Columbus.
According to police reports, Bowles told officers he was driving on West LaClede near Market Street just after 10 a.m. Saturday when he pulled behind two men walking in the middle of the street. Bowles blew his car horn and one man moved to the side of the road. Barnes, the other man, ignored the horn and continued to walk.
Reports said Bowles pulled alongside Barnes and asked why he refused to move. Barnes, reports said, answered with a curse word and after a little more talk pulled a handgun and fired several shots at Bowles. Barnes ran west on West LaClede after firing the shots. Officers followed Barnes' footprints in the snow to 137 W. LaClede, where Bowles identified him.
