YOUNGSTOWN -- Four Youngstown State University students have been named as the first recipients of the Officer Michael Hartzell Memorial Scholarship at YSU.
They are Jeffrey Cane of Canfield, Shawna Roberts of Austintown, Michael Sullivan of Youngstown and Racel Sullivan of Youngstown.
Hartzell, a Youngstown police officer, was killed on duty April 29. Howard and Mary Kay Hartzell, the slain officer's parents, had lunch with the first recipients at YSU earlier this month. Also attending was YSU President David C. Sweet.
To receive the scholarship students must have a 2.5 grade-point average or above. Special consideration will be given to children of police officers, YSU students majoring in criminal justice and graduates of Austintown Fitch High School, the slain officer's alma mater.
Cane and the Sullivans are children of police officers. Roberts is a graduate of Fitch High School.
