Going to leadership forum
STRUTHERS -- Elizabeth Sepesy, a pupil at Struthers Middle School, was recently accepted into the People to People World Leadership Forum. Elizabeth, daughter of Bob and Davita Sepesy, will be among several pupils earning high school credit at various Washington, D.C., sites March 8-14. The group will study leadership skills by taking part in discussions and exercises to experience how leaders develop strategies and make key decisions. Elizabeth was nominated for the honor based on scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential.

Ursuline financial aid
YOUNGSTOWN -- Financial aid application forms for the 2004-2005 school year will be available to interested students at an open house, scheduled for Feb. 8 at Ursuline High School. The forms make students eligible for various tuition programs offered through the high school. Applications must be completed, notarized and returned to the school by April 1.
St. Charles open house
BOARDMAN -- St. Charles School will host open houses for interested new families and prospective pupils from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Feb. 10 and 2 to 3 p.m. Feb. 29 at the school, 7325 Westview Drive. Included will be tours, information and question-and-answer sessions about the school's academic programs and philosophies, and parents are invited to bring their preschool and kindergarten children for an activity. Open house at Montessori
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley, 2008 Lynn Ave., will host an open house observation from 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 9 and 10, at the school. The open houses are open to parents of 3-year-old children and anyone interested in learning more about the program's philosophies and curriculum for ages 3 through grade 8. Call 788-4622.

Slavery debates at Oberlin
OBERLIN -- Several historians from across the county will be at Oberlin College from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Saturday to take part in "The Lane Debates: The Making of Radical Abolition and the Oberlin Commitment to Racial Egalitarianism." The event re-creates the 1834 and 1835 debates that took place at Lane Seminary and Oberlin College over slavery and rights for blacks and concludes with discussion. The historians will be dressed in period costume, and the re-enactments are designed to illuminate issues of conscience and commitment. YSU profs to read poetry
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two Youngstown State University English professors will read their prose and poetry at 7 p.m. Friday at the SMARTS Center in the Adler Art Academy, 258 Federal Plaza West, Suite 1, as part of the free 2003-2004 YSU Poetry Center reading series. Poet and author Philip Brady, who also is director of YSU's Poetry Center and Etruscan Press, has won four Ohio Arts Council Individual Artists Fellowship awards for his work. William Greenway has published seven books of poems, and has won the Ohio Arts Council Individual Artists Fellowship award, the Ohioana award, and was named Georgia Author of the Year in 1994.
Financial aid form help
The Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators will host "College Goal Sunday" at 36 various sites at 2 p.m. Feb. 8 to assist college applicants with college financial aid forms. New association president
YOUNGSTOWN -- Janet M. Boehm, associate professor and director of clinical education in the respiratory care program at Youngstown State University, was inaugurated president of the American Association for Respiratory Care during the 49th International Respiratory Congress in Las Vegas in December. AARC, the only professional membership association for respiratory therapists, represents some 30,000-plus members worldwide. Boehm, who has a bachelor's degree from Baldwin Wallace College and a master's degree from the University of Akron, was elected by the AARC membership in 2002 and spent 2003 as AARC president-elect. She has been a member of the AARC since 1978.

Entrepreneurial awards
CLEVELAND -- John Carroll University is promoting a contest and is looking for colleagues interested in nominating undergraduate, entrepreneurial students in the Ohio Valley region, made up of Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The student whose idea is nominated for first place will receive a $2,000 prize and an all-expense-paid trip to the National Global Student Entrepreneur Awards Competition in November. Second- and third-place Ohio Valley awards will be $1,000 and $500, respectively, and each winner will be invited to an awards ceremony at John Carroll University in May.
