MiniPage activities meet many state and national educational standards. This week's standards: Students use biographies and stories to understand the individuals who are honored by the nation. (Social Studies: History) Students explore factors that contribute to one's personal identity, such as interests, capabilities and perceptions. (Social Studies: Individual Development)
Activities:
1. Select one of the first ladies shown in today's MiniPage. Put her name on a piece of paper. Now find words or pictures of items you think she would like and paste them on your paper.
2. What more would you like to know about the early life of one of our presidents? Make a list of five questions you would ask a president or first lady if you could. Why would you like to know that information? Ask family members or friends to contribute questions to your list.
3. Which presidents: (a) liked to play sports, (b) liked to read, and (c) liked music? Which first ladies (a) were athletic, (b) were Girl Scouts, and (c) liked the arts?
4. Read news stories to find three young people (under 18 years of age) who have qualities that would make them good future presidential material. Write a brief paragraph about each person, describing his/her qualities.
5. Select a president or first lady you want to know more about. Use resource books and the Internet to learn more about him or her. Use these questions to guide your research: What more can you learn about his/her childhood? Where did he/she go to high school? What did he/she study in college? How did the couple meet? What jobs did he/she have before he/she went into politics?
