MAHONING COUNTY Addition planned for township building

Construction could begin as early as spring.
NORTH JACKSON -- A new addition will soon be added to the township building, and officials could receive additional grants for its roof.
Trustee Steve Gondol said at Thursday's meeting that construction of a 4,000- to 5,000-square-foot addition to the building, on state Route 18, could begin next spring at an estimated cost of about $600,000.
Officials plan to apply for a grant through the Mahoning County Solid Waste District and use it to pay for a steel shingle roof guaranteed for about 50 years, Gondol said, adding that trustees plan to submit the paperwork to the agency before Jan. 15.
Fund raising
Trustees have saved about $124,000 in community development funds -- money generated from the 0.5-percent county sales tax -- over a five-year period that will go toward the project, he noted.
Offices for the zoning and road departments and the cemetery sexton are on the second floor of the two-story township building.
The one-story addition will likely house those and other offices and will be accessible to people who use wheelchairs, Gondol noted.
The new section also could be rented by residents for dinner events and other functions, he added.
