HELOISE Betta fish require more than roots

Dear Readers: Brenda Bohner of Montpelier sent us a photo of her calico cat, Debbie, who likes to watch the betta fish in a large vase and bat at it.
She also said that the cat likes to nap in a homemade basket on the dining table, so she is sure not to miss a meal!

We did notice that the betta fish is in one of the "plant" jars. We wanted to take a couple of minutes to stress the fact that you have to feed these fish every day. When the jars first came out, it was believed that the fish could sustain themselves on just the roots of the plant. This is not true! They will slowly starve to death if not fed. So, pass this information along to anyone you know who has a fish "planter." And feed those fish! Heloise
Dear Readers: Here is an interesting cat question: What breed is a calico? "Calico" is not a breed but rather an unusual color pattern. There are many breeds of cats that can have calico markings.
And did you know that calico cats are almost always female? A male calico cat is rare, and they are usually unable to breed. Heloise
Here are some of Heloise Central's favorite pet hints:
UBarbara said she keeps all her dog's traveling supplies together in a small pet bed that he rides in when in the car. This way, she can grab the bed and have everything she needs right at hand.
UKelly said she keeps large bags of dog food in a large, metal trash can on her enclosed porch. This keeps the food dry, and rodents don't have a snack.
UJoyce said that when traveling with your pet, bring some water from your home so your pet doesn't get an upset stomach from unfamiliar water. You can put the water in a plastic gallon jug, and it's handy to pour whenever needed.
URuth said that when she is planning on being away from home, she puts each day's fish food in a cupcake liner. This way, whoever comes to feed the fish will give them exactly what they need.
UAnd me? My favorite pet hint is ... bring one into your life! Visit an animal shelter, and you just might find the right friend who needs a home. Heloise
Dear Heloise: My son got a hamster and a cage with lots of colorful plastic tunnels that give the hamster plenty of room to roam. However, I wanted to share a caution: Hamsters love to chew, and plastic seems to be a favorite. I noticed that there were a couple of wear spots where the hamster had been slowly gnawing the plastic. We replaced the tubes so we wouldn't have an escapee. So, if you have this type of hamster home, keep an eye on the tubes, or you just might have a fugitive on the loose. B. Giles in Colorado
