AREA COLLEGES Mt. Union finishes 4th in tourney; Titans lose
Geneva's women's team lost to Malone for the second time this month.
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated Colorado College, 68-64, on Thursday to finish fourth at the Cactus Jam Tournament.
Kyle Karpinski scored a career-high 32 points and had eight rebounds to lead the Purple Raiders (5-6). Brad Gerard added 17 points and Josh Long had nine.
Colorado (4-8) was paced by Michael Reich's 17 points, while Michael Nash scored 16 and Adam Mares 10.
Montclair State 103,Westminster 82
MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- Westminster fell behind 60-38 at halftime.
Pat O'Connor led the Titans (9-3) with 14 points, while Craig Hannon added 11. Ed Pagley and Mark DeMonaco scored 10 apiece. Pagley also had a team-best five assists.
O'Connor and DeMonaco were named to the all-tournament team.
Montclair State (5-) placed four scorers in double figures, led by Michael Gluck with a game-high 24 points.
Malone 92, Geneva 87
CANTON -- Geneva got 27 points from Tim Sawyer, including six 3-point field goals. Stefan Grundberg added 23 points and 12 rebounds in the loss for Geneva (8-6).
Malone (9-6), which led by as many as 16 points in the second half, got a game-high 31 points from Shane Conwell, while Chris Miller added 21 points.
Women
CANTON -- For the second time this month, Geneva fell to Malone.
On Thursday, Geneva dropped a 68-54 decision to the Pioneers. Geneva lost to Malone on Dec. 8, 75-70 in overtime.
Thursday's loss dropped Geneva to 6-5 overall, while Malone moved to 8-6.
Michelle Ling scored 18 points, including four 3-point field goals, to lead Malone, while Nikki Parson poured in a team-high 20 points and was 8-for-8 from the field.
Ali Cananzi buried five 3-point field goals and led Geneva with 15 points. Megan Gallagher scored 11 points and Allyson Clark had seven rebounds.
Heidelberg 60, Thiel 46
TIFFIN -- Heidelberg outscored Thiel 37-21 in the second half.
Sharonda Willis paced Heidelberg with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Katie Borngen added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Kristen Benjamin had game highs in both points (24) and rebounds (13), but the Tomcats (3-9) were unable to overcome their shooting woes from the field, connecting on just 33.9 percent (19-of-56). Fontella Jones and Nicole Valentino each added six points.
Ohio Wesleyan 65,Westminster 56
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster suffered its second consecutive defeat.
Ohio Wesleyan (7-3) was paced by Kelly Heil with a team-high 21 points and eight rebounds.
For Westminster, Erica Tallo led the way with team-high totals of 19 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and two blocked shots. It was Tallo's fifth double-double of the season.
Nicole Fee added 13 points for the Titans, while Alyson Gasper posted six assists.
Mount Union 68, Grove City 62
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union College snapped a seven-game losing streak with a come-from-behind win.
The Wolverines (5-4) led throughout the first half, building a 15-point lead at 32-17 on free throws by guard Rachel Romance with 4:01 remaining. The Purple Raiders (3-8) cut it to seven, 32-25, by halftime.
The Raiders took their first lead when Jen Brozak made a layup to give Mount Union a 44-43 edge with 12:35 left.
The Purple Raiders held Grove City without a basket in the final eight minutes of the game.
They were led by Ashley Bourdeau, with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Kyla Hogan scored 23 points.
The Wolverines were paced by Sandy O'Keefe, with 14 points.
Allegheny 69, John Carroll 67
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- A 6-for-9 effort at the free throw line in the last minute of play stood up Allegheny.
All five starters finished in double figures for the Gators (6-4). Raelynn Miles led the team with 11 points, while Meredith McDonough, Valery Medwid, Courtmey Steding and Caitlin Murtagh each scored 10. Murtagh converted 6-of-8 free throws and also grabbed six rebounds. McDonough also pulled down six rebounds and Miles had three assists.
Shayla Bell hit eight field goals on her way to 22 points for John Carroll (4-5).
