Hey, Dude, whazzup? ... I'm on a plane, man
San Jose Mercury News: Probable booking choices for your cross-country flight, circa 2007: Coach or business? Window or aisle? Main cabin or chatterbox rows?
Friendly advice: If the last option is not available, you may want to pack one of those noise-blocking headsets in your carry-on. (Or maybe the Quiet Skies, a new hit airline, will come to the rescue of those seeking a bit of downtime in the air.)
Government study
The jabber-in-the-sky days are approaching inexorably now that the requisite government agencies have agreed to study the feasibility and safety of allowing cell-phone use on airplanes. Within two years, perhaps, they're likely to resolve the thorny technical issues. The seemingly more mundane etiquette issues are sure to be with us longer.
(They) can be solved without passengers coming to blows. Amtrak has quiet cars, so quiet cabin sections may be possible. Common sense will be necessary. No yelling. Civility will be imperative -- as well as rules for dealing with the inevitable jerks.
