WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Penguins sloppy in 67-43 loss to Detroit
Youngstown State committed 20 turnovers in the Horizon League setback.
DETROIT -- Youngstown State shot just 33 percent from the floor and committed 20 turnovers in losing 67-43 to Detroit in a Horizon League women's basketball game Tuesday night.
The Penguins (6-5, 1-1 HL) fell behind 13-12 midway through the first half and never led again.
Barb Fabianova led Youngstown State with nine points, but she made just 4-of-14 shots, including only 1-of-7 from 3-point range.
Jen Perugini added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds, but she, too, was hampered by poor shooting. Perugini made just 3-of-11 shots.
Lauren Branson had six assists and seven turnovers. Cathy Hanek and Michelle Holmes finished with seven points apiece.
Detroit (3-8, 1-0 HL) was led by Lindsey Pasquinzo, with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Joanna Cooper and Katie Solnar added 10 points apiece.
Solnar also had seven assists, while April Savalli had seven rebounds.
Strong start
Youngstown State got off to a good start.
Two free throws by My'Kea Cohill with 13 minutes, 52 seconds remaining in the first half gave the Penguins a 10-2 lead.
It was 12-6 when Holmes made a layup at the 12:09 mark, but the Titans went on an 11-0 run, aided by four Penguins' turnovers.
Detroit, which started the game 1-for-7 from the field but made 14 of its last 26 attempts, led 36-24 at halftime.
The margin was 10 (52-42) with 9:01 remaining on a Holmes layup, but that basket would be the last of the game for the Penguins.
"We did not play with the intensity we needed" said Youngstown State coach Tisha Hill.
"Detroit came out and executed and successfully ran their game plan and we did not."
The Titans forced 13 Penguin turnovers in the first half, which they capitalized into 16 points.
The Penguins face Xavier (Ohio) on Friday at 2 p.m. in Cincinnati.
