YOUNGSTOWN -- Seventeen student-athletes recorded perfect 4.0 grade-point averages during the fall semester.
Overall, 156 student-athletes, or 49 percent, finished with a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
The athletes who registered 4.0 GPAs for the fall semester were Matt Brouse (football), Carmen DiPenti (golf), Jordan Dunn (swimming), Abby Ettenhofer (volleyball), Leslie Johnson (track and field), Catherine Krupko (track and field/cross country), Tom Krupko (football), Josh Page (baseball), Angie Pasquinelli (volleyball), Bob Perez (football), Gina Peretti (tennis), Jen Perugini (basketball), Jeremy Riehm (track and field/cross country), Bonnie Sherman (golf), Jeff Solt (baseball), Ashley Yager (golf) and Josh Zarlenga (golf).
The women's tennis team recorded the highest team GPA of the fall at 3.37. While the swimming & amp; diving squad was second with a 3.26 as 15 of 20 members had GPA's above 3.0 during the fall. The men's tennis team posted a 3.10 GPA in the fall, the highest of any male athletic team.
Men's basketball
INDIANAPOLIS -- Sophomore guard Quin Humphrey and Butler freshman guard A.J. Graves shared this week's Horizon League Player of the Week honor.
Both players recorded career highs in victories for their teams last week. Humphrey scored a career-best 26 points in the Penguins' 76-68 Horizon League victory over Loyola on Tuesday. Humphrey was 9-of-15 from the field and was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. He also grabbed seven rebounds and set a career high with three steals.

Allen named by WFMJ
YOUNGSTOWN -- Alex Allen of Ursuline High was named Mahoning County player of the year by WFMJ-TV (21).
Allen, a 6-foot, 198-pound senior, rushed for 2,455 yards and scored 154 points for the Irish. He set school and Steel Valley Conference records for yards rushing in a season.
Alamo Bowl party
SALEM -- The Salem/Perry Republican Party will host a free Alamo Bowl party on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at their headquarters, located at 230 E. State St., Salem.
Refreshments will be served and the game will be aired on a 10-foot projection screen.
Ursuline's Millerat Ashland
ASHLAND -- Amber Miller, a 2003 graduate of Ursuline High, is a member of the women's indoor track & amp; field team at Ashland University.
Miller is majoring in exercise science.
Brookfield namesnew football coach
BROOKFIELD -- Randy Clark has been named varsity football coach at Brookfield High.
Clark, a 1982 Brookfield High graduate, has been an assistant coach within the system for the past nine years.
He replaced Toby Gibson, who resigned following the 2004 season.
Thistledown'slast two live dates
NORTH RANDALL -- Thistledown's first post for live racing on Friday is Noon. There will be 11 races.
Thursday and Friday are the final two days of the 2004 live racing season. Post time on Thursday is 12:15 p.m. for a 10-race card.
Indians mediacaravan is Jan. 26
LIBERTY -- The 2005 Cleveland Indians media tour and Kidsfest, benefiting Tod Children's Hospital, will take place Jan. 26 at the Holiday Inn Metroplex in Liberty.
Tickets are $35 for adults and $15 for kids 12 and under.
The evening will include Cleveland Indians players, coaches and announcers, mascots and the YSU baseball team. There will also be an Indians' highlight film, sports memorabilia live and silent auctions and raffle, and a question and answer session.

City bowling event
Entries are being accepted for the 73rd annual city bowling championships at Camelot Lanes and Boardman Lanes.
Opening squad will be Jan. 21 with squads running Saturdays and Sundays through Jan. 30. Entries close Jan. 12.
The tournament will be held in upper and lower divisions. Upper division minimums are 1000 for team, 400 for doubles and 200 for singles. There is a 90 percent handicap (no limit) on singles (225), doubles (450) and team (1125).
Entry fee is $17 per bowler will all events $2 optional. Entries are available at all bowling centers or by calling (330) 758-8367.

COLUMBUS -- Ricardo Billings, a junior guard who started eight games last season before becoming a reserve, has left the Ohio State men's basketball team.

NEW YORK -- The Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks talked Monday night for the first time since the collapse last week of a three-team, 10-player trade that would have sent Randy Johnson to New York.
No progress was made, and the sides planned to talk again later in the week.
