Work continues on $1.5M center

WARREN -- Work is progressing on the new $1.5 million household hazardous waste recycling center for Trumbull and Geauga counties.
Bob Villers, director of the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste District, said it's likely the new building on Enterprise Drive, off Parkman Road N.W., will be ready in March.
The district's 6.4-acre property is a central location between Trumbull and Geauga counties.
Earlier this year, both counties' boards of commissioners gave the green light for the waste district to borrow $1 million to build the recycling center and new district offices. Ground was broken in April.
Once complete, the recycling center is expected to be open two days a week for residents to drop off household chemicals such as solvents, pesticides, oils and paint. The chemicals will be trucked away each day and nothing will be stored, buried or disposed of on site.
A single-story office building will house five district employees, whose offices are now on Youngstown-Warren Road. Plans call for a 4,200-square-foot pole building where household chemicals will be received and sorted.
The district receives $1.1 million a year from fees charged to waste haulers. A company will be contracted to run the chemical collection program from the new building; the cost is expected to be less than the $400,000 the district spends each year to collect waste at four day-long events in temporary locations.
