WOMEN'S BASKETBALL YSU goes after second HL victory in Detroit
The Penguins have won four of their last five games.
YOUNGSTOWN -- After playing its last five games at Beeghly Center, the Youngstown State women's basketball team (6-4, 1-0 Horizon League) embarks on a four-game road swing beginning with Detroit (2-8, 0-0) tonight at 7 at Calihan Hall.
The Penguins have won four of their last five games, including a 74-52 win over Cleveland State on Dec. 22. Senior Cathy Hanek scored 15 points, while senior Jen Perugini added 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Barb Fabianova had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Perugini needs 35 points to reach 1,000 for her career.
The Titans are coming off a 65-64 loss to Western Michigan on Dec. 22. Lindsay Pasquinzo scored 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range, and Katie Solner added 10.
Hill cautious
"We've had two good practices coming off our break," said Youngstown State coach Tisha Hill.
"Detroit ... is a very good team that has some good threats that we've got to do a good job against. Detroit ... can really shoot the 3 well. They can get out and pressure you defensively.
I told my team ... to focus on the things we are doing well right now and continue to do that and we should be fine. If we do what we have been doing well as far as transition and making that extra pass and reading and executing well in our offensive sets we'll do fine and be able to move the ball against them and handle their pressure."
Pasquinzo leads the team and ranks fifth in the Horizon League with 15 points per game, while Solner is averaging 10.7 points per game. As a team, the Titans are averaging 55.7 points per contest while allowing 70.3 points per game. Detroit is also shooting 34.9 percent from the field and 31.2 percent from 3-point range.
"We haven't been out on the road for awhile," said Hill. "I think right now I have been trying to put that back in their head that we have had success [away from home] this year. As we take the bus trip out there we are going to talk a lot about it and kind of keep their focus on what we try to do. They need to know that we need to really play hard to beat this team."
Last season, the two teams split the season series after the Penguins were granted a forfeit victory. The Titans defeated the Penguins, 75-40, in Calihan Hall in a February game.
Youngstown State will play its next game at Xavier (Ohio) on Friday at 2 p.m.
