Trustees mull station repairs

BOARDMAN -- Officials expect to decide soon whether it would be more cost efficient to repair the township's main fire station or build a new facility.
Fire Chief James Dorman said at Monday's trustees meeting that fire station No. 71, on U.S. Route 224 near Southern Boulevard, has had structural problems. The most recent problem surfaced a few days ago when termites were discovered in the basement, Dorman noted.
Over the past few years, the structure, built in 1926, has had water seepage in the basement, problems with wiring and a leaky roof, he added. Unusually heavy rains during the past two summers may have contributed to the water leaking into the basement, though an exact cause has not been determined, Dorman said.
Before deciding if a new fire station will be needed, trustees are considering hiring MS Consultants Inc. of Youngstown to estimate the cost of necessary repairs to the building. Depending on the cost estimate, trustees could decide the matter at their January meeting, Dorman said.
